your Uruguayan HOME with a heart

enjoy the simple life with a touch of class

Peter Wirth combines Swiss and Italian hospitality with unique Uruguayan charm to make you feel at home in Salto.

Once built by a wealthy landowner madly in love with a ballerina from Buenos Aires, our Casa is the most heart-warming place to rest and enjoy the colonial flair of this well preserved mansion in the center of the old heritage town of Salto in Northern Uruguay where Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi faught and won his first independence battle.

CASA WIRTH (5 bedrooms, each with bathroom)

We offer the choice of either renting individually one or two double bedrooms, each one with a bathroom, or if you want more privacy,  the whole Casa is available, it includes five double bedrooms each one with a bathroom. The house has a sun terrace with views of Argentina and a garden patio to quietly enjoy or to have a great asado evening. In addition there is a well equipped kitchen that you can freely use. WIFI is available everywhere and there is a warm fireplace (we call "quematutti") to sit next to, The living/dining room and the garden patio or the large sun terrace give you the chance to read a book, get a tan or to plan your next day.  If you want to swim in the large pool put your bathing suite on and take a good swim and enjoy the fresh waters during the hot Summer months.

Privacy is very important to us - we want you to feel at home. Our staff Abel and Veronica are available during your stay to prepare you breakfast as well as to make up your room. If you need special attention like washing or ironing clothes just ask for it. Furthermore we can prepare meals of all kinds. You can access the lounge, the large garden as well as the main kitchen and cook for yourself. A garage space for your car is also available on request.

Escape here from the busy rest of the world and relax in our big garden or on the terrace, recline on a deck chair, taste a delicious passion fruit from our trees and breathe the fresh fragrance of the orchids and red roses.

Casa Wirth provides the perfect location to explore the old city of Salto by walking through the historic center and visits it's museums. Dive into the exciting 250 year old history of the city and get to know true Uruguayan life.

at Estancia Don Pipo

Free your mind on the back of a horse

Once in South America and in Uruguay, you want to go out into the vast prairies of grazing land, forests and rivers.  Christine's "Estancia Don Pipo" is just 20km outside of Salto and it is definitely the best place to recharge your batteries with fresh clean air! We arrange trips to the estancia and can drive you there. You can visit for the day, ride on the well bred Criollo horses, or even stay overnight. On the way to the farm, there is a famous pilgrim site called "Gruta de Padre Pio" that you can visit.

On her 1'000 ha large property Christine raises more than 100 Criollo and Arab horses, keeps a cattle herd of 400 Aberdeen Angus, 100 sheep, a dozen chicken and of course her beloved labradors. Here you can take a ride on one of the well-tempered Criollos and get a new perspective from the back of a horse. On request and for a fee we prepare great asados (Uruguayan BBQs) and offer overnight-stays at one of the two traditional Gaucho huts.

WELCOME to salto, to casa wirth

Peter Wirth

Love plays an important role in his life. Peter fell in love with Uruguay and Salto in particular. He loves its people, its history, its culture and the colonial Gaucho tradition. It reminded him of San Miguel de Allende. He speaks fluently Swiss German dialect, Spanish, English, Italian, German, French as well as a little Portuguese and Mandarin.

CHRISTINE von Bonstetten has her roots in old Switzerland. Her family left Switzerland in the early 50s and landed in Uruguay. Her biggest passion are horses. All her life she has bred and won awards with Criollo and Arab horses. Today she also breeds Aberdeen Angus cattle at her estancia.. The "Estancia Don Pipo" is personally run by Christine and a team of Gauchos. She loves to introduce you to the world she grew up in, the heart of Uruguay. She speaks fluently Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. Some people say, she even speaks "Criollo" and "Angus" with her animals... Nobody will show you the wide open grasslands on a horseback better than her.
